Merry Christmas

Happy Holidays from Cooper, Mommy and Daddy!

Mmm, bagels.

Daddy, if you wanted to eat that, you shouldn't have left it on the counter.

Cage free, organic and semi-free range

Mommy and Daddy got me a new bed, so I don't have to sleep in my crate any more. I can roam around the downstairs all night if I want to. I'm still not allowed upstairs at night, because I like to wake Mommy and Daddy up really early and they don't like that so much. Here's me in my new bed, looking like the doggies in the catalog.

Smells like baby.

Three months ago, Cousin Sami got a little human sister! Cousin Sami stayed with us for a few days. Mommy brought home a blankie from the hospital so Cousin Sami could get used to her new sister's smell. We weren't sure what we were supposed to do with it.

Cousin Megabyte (Sami's little sister) is okay. I like to sniff and lick her, but she can't play yet, so I pretty much ignore her in favor of people who can play with me.

Canadian Thanksgiving, eh?

Mommy and Daddy went on vacation in October. While they went far away, I went on my own vacation to visit Grandma, Grandpa and Aunt Tori. It was fun! I could run around in their back yard, chasing squirrels, eating deer poo...it was great! One weekend we went to visit Uncle's family for Canadian Thanksgiving. It was fun! There was tons of stuff to steal, like a turkey, a pumpkin, Grandma's pumpkin pie. Fun!

I'm helpful!

The day after Thanksgiving I decided to help Mommy clean out the closets.

I'm here to help Mommy!

This is kind of boring Mommy...

Zzzzzz....

Pups in the Park

I'm going to try to post some things from the past few months...starting with the baseball game. In June, Mommy, Daddy, Aunt, Uncle, Cousin Sami and I all went to a Pittsburgh Pirates game! It was so much fun!

I got to take my first elevator ride...

I got to sit in the stands...

Cousin Sami sat under the stands...

And I got to eat a piece of Daddy's hot dog (sorry, no picture for that one)! I hope we get to go again next year!

The Story of the Bump on My Head

Note from Mommy -- this post is kind of gross, consider yourself warned.

I'm a bad blogger! I said in my last post I'd update you about some trips to the doctor, and now more than 2 months later I still haven't! In all honesty, I wrote this in September, but Mommy had to add pictures to the post for me, and she never got around to it. Bad Mommy! Go to time out!

Anyhow, here's the story. If you've been following my blog, you may remember when I went for my first doctor's appointment in May 2007 last year. I had a little bump on my head, and the doctor said it was an ingrown hair and pulled this long wad of fur out of my head. Well the bump came back, so Mommy asked my new doctor about it and she said not to worry about it unless it changed size.

Then in August, I had an ear infection. It didn't really bother me, but Mommy said it looked yucky so we needed to go to the vet's. She also said that she didn't want me to go deaf, because while I hardly listen to her now, if I was deaf I would never listen. I didn't really care because I don't know if I have told you this before, but I LOVE THE VET'S. There are other dogs there, and cats, and the people who work there pet me and give me treats and tell me how handsome I am. That place is awesome.

Anyhow, we were there for my ear, and Mommy told the vet she thought my bump was getting bigger. The vet did a biopsy, where she put a needle into my bump. I didn't cry at all until the vet left the room. I missed her! Anyhow, she said it was a sebaceous cyst, and we shouldn't worry about it. If it got bigger, or started to hurt me, they might have to take it out, but for now it was okay. So we left the vet's, went to the park and went home. Did I mention that I get to go to the park after I go to the vet's? Even on weekdays? I never get to go to the park on weekdays. I LOVE THE VET'S.

About a month later, Daddy was playing with me, and when he touched the back of my head, I whimpered because it hurt. They also noticed that my bump was getting bigger. So Mommy called the vet and made an appointment for that evening. Mommy and Daddy went to work. When Mommy came home, my bump had grown to the size of a golf ball and my entire face was swollen. She said I looked like I had been in a fist fight! Off to the vet's we went. I was so excited to be at the vet's! I was bouncing all over the place. My favorite tech was working behind the front desk and I jumped up on the counter and she gave me kisses. Mommy told me to at least try to act like there was something wrong with me so the vet wouldn't think she was crazy.

So we saw the vet, and she said that my swollen face and the bump were totally unrelated. I probably got stung by a bug, which made my face swell, and somehow my bump had gotten infected. She gave me an antibiotic for the bump and an antihistamine for the swelling. Then we went to the park! It was fun!

The next morning, I scratched my head because it itched. Daddy examined my bump and said that there was a little blood coming out of it. Mommy called the vet and they said to keep watching it, if it kept oozing to call back later. Mommy decided to take the day off of work to keep me company. She wouldn't let me scratch my head, but it really itched. Finally, she turned her back on me and I started to scratch. Mommy turned around, yelled "No!" and all of a sudden my paw was all sticky and my head felt a little better. The sticky stuff on my paw was all over the room. Mommy shut the door so I couldn't leave the room and got a washcloth to get the sticky stuff off my head and paws. I tried to lick it. I wanted to know what it tasted like. Mommy called the vet and they said I could come over right away. I was thrilled, I got to go to the vet's again! We went and the doctor shaved my head and squeezed the sticky stuff out of my head and shot some steroids into my bump. It didn't hurt at all. Then we went to the park AGAIN. BEST. WEEK. EVER.

Then on Saturday, Mommy noticed my head was still swollen. The vet had said that it shouldn't be swollen anymore. Mommy was cleaning the part of my head where the sticky stuff had come out and more sticky stuff started oozing out! The vet was closed, so Mommy pressed on it to try to get as much stuff out as she could. She said it was gross. It didn't hurt, so I didn't mind. Then as she was cleaning out the gunk, a big clump of fur came out! Mommy almost threw up, but I thought it was cool! Turns out I did have an ingrown hair and it had been growing and growing for a year and that's what caused the sebaceous cyst.

So, after that, the swelling went down. My head healed fast because I was a good boy and didn't scratch it. My fur grew back so I'm no longer bald. Mommy says that she can feel the ingrown hair coming back, but it's not so bad. Doctor says if it gets infected again, I might have to have surgery so it never comes back again. But for now, we'll wait it out to see what happens.

In all, I thought this whole ordeal was very exciting and fun. I got lots of attention, got to go to the vet's a bunch of times, got to go to the park a bunch of times...it was great. Mommy says it was not fun and she was very worried...but I'm all better now and she and the vet aren't worried any more.

Vote for GRIN

Just a quick post to ask you to vote for my rescue, GRIN, in Care2.com's "America's Favorite Animal Shelter" contest. The rescue with the most votes will win a grand prize of $10,000. Think of how many more doggies like me GRIN could save with $10,000! Please vote here: http://www.care2.com/animalsheltercontest/20924/?refer=18739.09.1222284017.1267

I'll try to post later this week. I've been having some medical issues -- don't worry nothing bad! In fact I didn't even know there was anything wrong with me until Mommy took me to the vet. But I'm hopefully all better now. I'll tell you all about it soon!

My first trip to the pet store

A couple of weekends ago Mommy and Daddy took me to the pet store. They hadn't taken me before because they didn't think that I could handle all the excitement without flipping out. I have no idea why they thought that.

Did you know that at the pet store, they have aisles of toys? Hundreds and hundreds of toys?

And crates full of pets? Like birds and mice and ferrets?

And did you know that there is an all you can eat rawhide buffet? Mommy says it isn't all you can eat. But I don't believe her.

Coop-burgler

I've decided that I really like to steal. I like to steal mail, shoes, pillows, socks, underwear, screwdrivers...you name it, if it isn't nailed down I like to pick it up in my mouth and run around the house with it. Not only do I steal things from the floor, I've started jumping up on the table to steal things.

So, even though I've been stealing a lot, Mommy and Daddy are still letting me roam the house while they're out. On Saturday night, Mommy and Daddy went out and I went upstairs to see if there was anything fun to steal or play with. I decided I'd try to get into the spare room. I'm not allowed in there, but the door doesn't latch, so Mommy and Daddy blocked the door with some plastic bins. I was able to push the door open and squeeze by the bins to get in the room! It was so exciting! But then I realized I couldn't get out! I was stuck! I had to wait until Mommy and Daddy came home to let me out! It was so embarrassing.

GRIN's New Web site

First, I can't believe I haven't posted in two months! Sorry about that! I've been having a lot of fun this summer. I'll try to get you caught up soon!

I just wanted to tell everyone to check out GRIN's new Web site. It's still at the same place, and still has cute golden retrievers up for adoption, but just looks different!

Eddy's blog

My friend Eddy started his own blog, check it out here.

Eddy's a GRIN dog just like me. Eddy has a pet bird. I wish my Mommy and Daddy would let me have a pet.

Dear Pittsburgh Zoo:

At the zoo, which is really close to my house, there is a baby tiger cub. His mommy doesn't love him like my Mommy loves me, so they are considering getting him a friend, which if you read this article could be a dog.

Dear Pittsburgh Zoo: I'm not doing anything during the day, I could use a job. Please, please pick me! I love baby animals, kitties and playing! The baby tiger could even come to my house if he wanted. Mommy and Daddy wouldn't mind!

Can I keep him?

A few weeks ago, I heard a tap, tap, tapping noise at the front window, I jumped up and saw a little yellow bird fly away. A week or two later, I heard the same noise at the office window. I looked up and it was the same bird. He just kept sitting on the window, tap and tapping. Then I jumped on the window and he left. But then he came back, and he kept coming back day after day. I think he wants to be my new pet.

Mommy and Daddy think that he used to live in the birdhouse in our back yard. Over the winter there was a storm and the birdhouse fell out of the tree and broke into pieces. The tree it was in was dead, so Mommy and Daddy had it cut down. So the bird returned from his summer in Florida and his house was gone! How sad for him! So we think he is trying to get into the house to ask where his house went! Mommy and Daddy went to the store and bought him a new house, I hope he likes it!

Hi River and all other GRIN dogs!

As you'll see in the comments on my last post, one of my GRIN brothers, River left me a comment. I love hearing from other GRIN dogs and their families! It makes my tail wag! I wish we lived closer so we could go to the meetings and picnics and see the other GRIN dogs! Maybe one day... first I have to get over getting car sick on long drives!

And I love licking the dishes in the dishwasher too! So much so that once I tried to walk into the dishwasher. Mommy yelled because she thought I was going to snap off the door. Then Mommy and Daddy got a new dishwasher because the old one leaked (which had nothing to do with me trying to stand on the door, I swear!). I'm not allowed to even think about standing on this one.

Oh, and as a note to River's Mom...I think that River and Jasper need some cupcakes. Not people cupcakes, they're just for special occasions, but maybe doggie cupcakes? They taste much better than mice. At least I think they do, I've never eaten a mouse, but I bet Cousin Sami has! I can't wait to read River's success story! I'm sure you'll come up with something great!

What we need around here...

What we need around here is a bigger chair. There's no where for me to sit when I'm in the office! Where am I supposed to sit? On the floor?

Happy Belated Birthday to Me!

So my real birthday was on April 5. I'm pretty lucky when it comes to rescue dogs, most don't know when their real birthday. Like Cousin Sami, they just told her her birthday was April 1. No one knows when her real birthday is, or even exactly how old she is. When my first set of parents gave me up, they gave GRIN all my vet records, so Mommy and Daddy know exactly how old I am and know when to celebrate my birthday.

That being said, Mommy was in Kansas on my birthday, visiting her cousin and his family. So Daddy and I celebrated together. Daddy sang to me in the morning. Then at night he bought me a cheeseburger from Wendy's for dinner. It was so yummy! It made me stinky, but that doesn't bother me! Mommy was sad she missed my actual birthday and promised we'd celebrate it when she got back. But then Mommy was sick and then really busy at work, so we didn't celebrate it until last week.

Mommy got cupcakes from a local fancy cupcake bakery. She said she would have said the name of the bakery, and maybe even would have linked to their Web site, but the clerk at the bakery was very rude to her. When she asked if they had doggie cupcakes, he said they did and pointed to a plate of teeny-tiny cupcakes. Mommy asked if they didn't have any bigger ones, and the clerk said "It probably isn't good for your dog to eat anymore than that." Mommy explained it was my birthday and that I was a big boy. The clerk rolled his eyes at her. Mommy said he was a judgemental jerk. Look at this picture, the brown one is the doggie cupcake, the white is the people cupcake. What a rip-off!

Since it was my birthday, and despite what the jerk said, Mommy and Daddy gave me a people cupcake. They let me sit at the table and everything. They put two candles in it and sang Happy Birthday to me. I tried to eat the cupcake while the candles were still lit. Mommy thinks when they were breeding my ancestors to be nice and cute, they might have inadvertently bred out the fear of fire. I had no idea that I could catch on fire! Good thing Mommy and Daddy were there to keep me safe. After they blew the candles out for me, Mommy cut the cupcake up for me and let me eat it standing on the table. It was so yummy! The icing stuck to the roof of my mouth so I got to lick it off for a few minutes after I was done! Then Mommy gave me the doggie cupcake, which was yummy too!

I can't wait for my next birthday!

Easter

Sorry, I'm catching up on posting! I never did tell you how fun Easter was. First, Daddy stayed home on Friday and we went to the park. Then on Saturday we went to the park again and met Cousin Sami and Aunt. They brought Uncle's Mom and her dogs, Kirin and Mika. You might remember them from a previous post. Kirin and Mika are fun, they like to run and play, just like Sami and I do. So we ran around the park for a while and got muddy. We were so muddy that after we got to go to the creek for a swim. Aunt says I treat the pond at the creek like a spa. I just go in and lay down and have a nice soak. Mommy encourages me, that way when I get muddy I don't have to get hosed off when we get home.

On Easter Sunday we met Cousin Sami at the park again. The other dogs didn't come because they were too tired from Saturday. They must have played too hard! After we went to the park, we went to Aunt Tori's house. All four of my grandparents were there, along with Aunt, Uncle, Uncle's parents, and Cousin Sami and Kirin and Mika. So there were 10 people and 5 dogs. It was great! I had lots of people to fuss over me and give me treats! Mommy had hoped I'd be tired from the park and would nap, but I was too excited to nap! I stayed up all day long and pestered everyone for pets and treats. The next day I was very tired. Mommy said I had an Easter hangover.

Oh and Mommy brought my ears. I refused to wear them. Aunt Tori and Cousin Sami were tricked into wearing them, and they were not very happy about it.

Happy Birthday to Me!

Today I turn two years old! Yippee!

Happy Birthday Cousin Sami!

Today Cousin Sami turns 4 years old! Cousin Sami is my best doggie friend. Here are the top 5 reasons I love Cousin Sami, in no particular order.

1. She has my back at the dog park. When another dog barks at me, she'll get in the middle of things. She always takes my side.

2. She is a big treat hound. Whenever Mommy gives Cousin Sami a treat, she gives me a treat too. And I like treats.

3. I love to give her kisses and slobber all over her. And she doesn't seem to mind...much.

4. While she isn't nearly as bad as I am, when Cousin Sami does something bad, she really does something bad -- like weird bad. And I think that makes me look well behaved by comparison. (Note from Mommy: "No, it doesn't.")

5. Cousin Sami loves to run around the dog park with me and chase me. It's my favorite thing that I get to do all week.

Hope you have a good birthday Cousin Sami!

Tori's visit

Last month, Aunt Tori came and stayed with us for a week and a half! It was fun. I was sick for part of her stay, but that didn't stop me from playing! Here's Aunt Tori hanging out in the driveway. We were waiting for Daddy to get his act together before we could go to the park. Sometimes Daddy can be a real poke.

Here we are in the back of the car at the park. I just wanted to get out of the car and run, but Mommy made me wait until we got our picture taken. That's why I look sad. Here we are at the dog park. Tori didn't run much. But she did enjoy one of my favorite things to do, letting her fur blow in the breeze. It was so windy, it made my ears and tongue flap!

Then we were tired, so we came home and napped. Mommy sat between us on the couch. Daddy had to go upstairs, there was no room for him!

Now see if you can tell me what's wrong with this picture...

Why is she free, while I'm in my crate? Not fair. And why is she staring at me? It's not a zoo!

I didn't win :(

I didn't win the Bissell MVP contest. Thanks to everyone who voted for me. I'll give you a big slobbery kiss next time I see you.

The top vote getter for the week was a very handsome dog named Dash. I must admit, he's very good looking. Take a look for yourself:

My chair

Let's get the business out of the way -- last day to vote for me:
http://www.bissell.com/redirect.asp?page_id=47128&Pet=2310

Here's a picture of me napping in a chair. You might recognize this chair from a lot of other pictures. Mommy's had this chair forever. Since before she adopted me and even before she met Daddy. It's the chair I use as a trampoline to get into the front window. After close to one year of using the chair in such a manner, the top seam started to tear. The hole kept getting bigger and bigger and you could see the chair's stuffing. Mommy didn't sew the hole up because I was being a good boy and didn't try to steal the stuffing. She was afraid if she did something to it, I'd get interested in it, and I would want to steal the stuffing and destroy the chair. Which is probably true. So she just left the chair alone. Until...

A few weeks ago, cousin Sami came over to play one day while Mommy, Daddy, Aunt and Uncle went somewhere. Cousin Sami ate the stuffing! I told her not to, but she just wouldn't listen. She is not good like I am. I think she learned her lesson because Aunt said that Sami was throwing up chair stuffing for days. I told her it was a bad idea.

So, Mommy had to cover the chair, and the chair is now green. I can still nap in it and use it as a trampoline, so it's fine with me.

Vote for Me!

No, not in the presidential primary (although I'd make a great president), but in the Bissell Most Valuable Pet Photo Contest. The top five dogs based on votes will make it to the semi-finals each week. The top vote getter of the week's parents get a Pet Hair Eraser vacuum cleaner, which Mommy says that we could use as all my fur seems to be woven into the furniture. Then after all the voting is over, Bissell will take all the semifinalists and choose one winner. That winner gets his (or her) picture on a vacuum cleaner box! And most importantly, the winner gets $10,000 to give to a charity of his (or her) choice. If I had $10,000, I'd give it to GRIN so they could help more dogs like me!

My mom has fleas -- The lost post

Hi everyone! We found a lost post! I wrote this back in November, November 11 to be exact, but we forgot to post it! Enjoy!

I forgot to tell everyone, last weekend, mommy and I took a bath. I think mommy had fleas, so she needed a bath. Why I had to go in with her, I don't know. At first I was really excited to go upstairs, because I hardly ever get to go upstairs. Then mommy made me go into the bathroom, and she closed the door. I was mad, because I wanted to go exploring upstairs. Then she turned on the faucet and tried to lure me into the bathtub by letting me drink out of the showerhead. I got into the tub, but then mommy tried to get me all wet and I tried to escape. While I was trying to get out I pulled down the shower curtain. And the curtain rod. Mommy picked me up and put me back in the tub. I kept trying to get out, but she kept putting me back in. It was not fun. Then she put shampoo all over my fur. I rubbed it all over her clothes because, as I said before, she was the one with fleas, not me, so she needed the shampoo. I'm too handsome to have fleas. Finally, she rinsed all the soap off of me and dried me off. Then she made me stay in the kitchen when all I wanted to do was roll in the carpet. In the kitchen all I had to roll on was a towel. It was unfair. Mommy then asked if I was mad at her. I kissed her on the nose, because I can't be mad at her. After all, she does have fleas. Poor mommy. {Note from Mommy: I DO NOT have fleas!}

Sick as a dog

So, where have I been? What have I been doing? Well, since New Year's I've been sick. Not real sick, but sick none-the-less. But don't worry loyal readers, I'm all better now! I wanted to tell you that I was better before I told you about being sick because I didn't want anyone to be concerned -- trust me, Mommy and Daddy were concerned enough for everyone.

It all started on New Years Day. Mommy and Daddy decided that they were going to do nothing that day because it was rainy and yucky and they had to go back to work the next day. So Mommy and I sat on the couch and watched TV all day. Mommy didn't notice, but I wasn't feeling well then. Then for the next couple of days, I was really mopey. I didn't want to play much. I still went for my walks, but I wasn't my normal self. Mommy really started to worry when one day after she threw a bone into the family room, I ran to get it, but only pretended to eat it so she wouldn't worry that I wasn't feeling well. Mommy left the room, but she forgot something, so she came back she caught that I was faking! She was very worried, because she knows how much I love bones. She was so worried that she and Daddy skipped a party to stay home with me. That happened on a Friday, and Mommy said if I wasn't better by Monday, we were going to the doctor's.

Over that weekend, I started to feel better and was back to my normal fun self. I was going to the dog park and running around and playing. Then two weeks later, Mommy took me on a walk one morning and I threw up. Mommy was worried because the only other time I had thrown up was when I got car sick. She kept and eye on me and I didn't get sick again...until the next week. The next week, I threw up twice in two days and was mopey again. Mommy called the vet and made an appointment for me to see the doctor.

First the doctor thought I might have eaten something that was stuck in my tummy. She took x-rays of my insides and there was nothing weird in my tummy. Then she thought maybe I had worms, so I took a test for that, and turns out that I didn't have worms. Then the doctor took my temperature -- and she didn't use an ear thermometer like Mommy uses...the indignity! -- and I had a fever. So doctor put me on antibiotics, which made me get sick out the other end. A few days after I was done with the antibiotics, I started to throw up again. We went back to the doctor and she had me get a blood test. When they got the results from that, they thought that I might have Addison's Disease, which can be life threatening if it isn't treated! So I went to the vet's again for another test. That came back negative too, so I didn't have Addison's.

At this point the doctor said that they had ruled out everything life-threatening, which we were glad to hear. Doctor then put me on a special food to see if I was allergic to my food. The special food made me sicker! I had my first, and hopefully last, accident inside the house while Mommy and Daddy were at work. I was so embarrassed, but Mommy told me it wasn't my fault. She was said that I was a good boy because I had my accident in the kitchen on the tile where it was easy to clean up.

So then, the doctor said that maybe I had reflux...just like people do! So, she told Mommy to give me an acid-reducer (I won't say which one, unless the pharmaceutical company wants to pay me for product placement). Mommy gives me a pill a half hour before I eat. We've been doing this for a couple of weeks now, and I haven't been sick since! Hooray! Even better, Mommy wraps the pill in cheese!

So we're pretty sure that I have acid reflux. Mommy and Daddy are so happy that I'm better. I'm back to normal, playing and running and pestering!

RIP Beckett

Mommy came home from work yesterday and she was very sad. She hugged me extra hard. Turns out that one of the other doggies at GRIN passed away. He wasn't just any dog, because the rescue finds homes for hundreds of dogs, he was the first dog that the rescue had offered to Mommy and Daddy.

Beckett was just like me, he was young, he liked to play and swim and sleep on the couch. When the adoption counselor first told Mommy about him, they told her that he had a couple of seizures. This is fairly common in doggies like me, and usually the dog can take a pill and he'll be better. But the adoption counselor said they didn't know enough about the seizures yet to say for sure if they'd go away or not, since they had only had Beckett for a couple of weeks. Mommy almost said yes because she wanted a dog so badly. She said no because she was scared that Beckett would have a seizure while he was home alone when she and Daddy were at work, and that he would get hurt and no one would be there to help him. As much as she wanted him, and loved his cute pictures, she said no.

Then, GRIN offered her another dog, but he had hip problems, also common with dogs like me, and since Daddy wanted a dog who could run with him, again she said no. Then they offered her me. While I was healthy, I was less well behaved than Beckett and the other doggie, but Mommy thought she'd be better able to handle the misbehaving, and Mommy said that she and Daddy would like to meet me...and the rest is history!

Mommy and Daddy never forgot Beckett. They followed his story on the GRIN website. They laughed at the pictures of Beckett in the swimming pool, and were saddened when they heard his seizures weren't going away and that he was getting sicker.

Mommy always said that if she and Daddy won the lottery she'd quit her job, buy a big house with a big fenced in backyard and a swimming pool and adopt Beckett so we could be brothers. While they never won the lottery, she's says she's sure now he's somewhere now where he can run and play -- and where he has a swimming pool.
